Let me weigh in on what intrigues us so much about this 1st great period of English poetry. And in the course of boasting, music is made. That might be why so much love poetry is highly formal sonnets especially: So much to catch up on.
Fine knacks for ladies John Dowland. I would have included Montagu and Aphra Behn but the date of lqdy births caused me not to. Music by John Dowland. It is a different kind of sonnet. Even the women in the poems, the ones who stand apart from others of their own gender, are chattel nonetheless.
Pinsky, thank you for introducing Montagu. An accomplished singer, as well, he is primarily remembered as a composer and in that capacity became the first to write solo songs with accompaniment.
It allows the power structure to stay securely in place. The peddler-lover calls out his wares, admitting their worthlessness knacka at the same time proclaiming that, because “the heart is true,” they are extremely valuable. And as you say, both poems have an extraordinary ability to be rooted to the rhythms and vernacular of their time and place, and yet, can transcend that time and place, too.
