Gyo by Junji Ito

While Gyo does not hit the same note of seductively dreamy logic or obsessive terror of as Uzumakithe world Ito weaves is a wonderfully weird one. Apart from the ghastly, convincingly-drawn deaths, the book projects an effective atmosphere of creeping fear as the town’s inhabitants become less and less human, and more and more bizarre things begin to happen.

As these fishy menaces stampede the beaches of Japan, crawling their putrid way toward the major cites, a young couple finds themselves caught up within the mayhem.

Owaki notices Yoshida is looking for something, to which she replies she’s looking for a hole that’s shaped like herself. I think it’s about obsession, repetition, intensification to the point of spiraling out of control.

It just got dumber and dumber and dumber as it went on. Props to Junji Ito for that.

Return to Book Page. The cover boasts that it has a “death stench”, which I will likely never see another book do, ever. It was later republished as Gyo: Big, Big Spoiler Alerts.

He has an image in his little nightmare fantasy head, starts small and then lets it build until you are. Adventures in the Floating World: Gyo

The monster in this short story is dead from the start, washed up and rotting on a sunny beach. Two hikers, Owaki and Yoshida, meet while hiking, having the same intention to see the fault. Later that night, Owaki has a nightmare about Nakagaki trapped inside the hole because it has been deformed by the earthquake. The fish then suddenly scuttle away, diving back into the ocean. This one starts on an absurd note and by the halfway mark reaches nearly transcendental heights of absurdity. Gyot muidu ma lugesin teist korda, seekord sai nautida deluxe hardcover versiooni. Tadashi encounters Kaori and rescues her from one of the acts at the circus and takes her to Koyanagi’s Lab. The creatures are eventually revealed to consist of a small metallic, legged structure with the carcass of a dead animal and later, hyo strapped on top.

Junjo Ito, in his eerie drawing style captivated me in many of Gyo’s pages.

Here, he attaches himself to a modified version of the mechanical legs, equipped with a zeppelin-like air balloon and a housing for a second person on the underside. At first they appear merely as smaller fish, but later also as larger sea creatures such as sharks and even a whale.
