A friend suggested that I read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Jeahnette a few months ago, and I have to admit when she first described it I was a bit leery.

We won’t be privy to the magical thinking powers of some among us, and would likely be as shocked at its original source as we’d be amazed at the strength and succor it provides them.

In fact, that was a major concern I had while picking up this jannette. She doesn’t speak of her parents with any bad feelings. A part of me was hoping that Walls pulled a James Casfillo and made a lot of this up, but another part of me realizes she probably didn’t. A young girl comes of age in a dysfunctional family of nonconformist nomads with a mother who’s an eccentric artist and an alcoholic father who would stir the children’s imagination with hope as a distraction to their poverty. The Glass Castle is a beautifully-written, emotional read. That’s not to say what she’s writing isn’t true, it’s just that everything is so remarkably devastating at times and uplifting in others that it’s hard to imagine anyone having such a clear head going through it all. These people all feel so real, so sympathetic and so vivid. It is so refreshing to read about.
